My book (The Book Thief) ends as Liesel finds out that Max, survived through the concentration camp. They get reunited when WW2 ends, finally seeing each other. "Liesel came out. They hugged and cried and fell on the floor."(Markus Zusak Pg. 548), this is the moment when max returned and reunited with Liesel. Death (the narrator) comes to take Liesel's soul as she has become very old, and returns her book as he takes her soul. My book matters because it is a good, fictional representation of what went on in Nazi Germany. It depicts a great story about a family and friends who live and struggle through WW2. The most valuable takeaway from The Book Thief is that we should Appreciate the things that we have because not all people have it. Max was barely even allowed to move or he would of been slaughtered, the Nazis had it out for all the jews and they live pretty terrible lives during the Holocaust. People today should take the valuable takeaway from The Book Thief that we should be grateful for the things we have and the easy life that we live, compared to the jews in the holocaust, and the many other groups of people that have been mistreated in history. In The Book Thief, it states, "I am haunted by humans.",(Markus Zusak Pg.550), this can be taken in the way that max was terribly mistreated in the book by the Nazis who were evil to all Jews.

In my book (The Book Thief), it talks about Nazi Germany in World War 2. This event can be compared to modern times as North Korea has fallen into a very similar path. Both events that occurred are being headed by a Dictator who has gained overarching power of the country. To add onto that, both Nazi Germany and North Korea caused much fear and other nations took/are taking precautions if they were to attack another country. One more similarity would be the effect on the people, the rights and freedoms of the countries taken over by the dictator. In both scenarios, the people in these countries have been cut off from the outside world and are getting a misconception of what their countries goals are. The press and freedom to speak out against the government is eliminated, so these people are just blindly following the system or just doing it out of fear. Finally the last similarity, when North Korea and Nazi Germany both became totalitarian states, they massively built up their military.
My book ( The Book Thief) connects to WW2, as it is told in perspective of Nazi Germany during WW2. A girl named Liesel begins to live with foster parents after the death of her brother and eventually the foster parents take in a Jewish boy named Max, who lives in the basement of the home. During WW2 in real life, many Jewish people especially children, hid down in basements or closets of peoples homes to avoid the Nazis. As the story goes on, Liesel experiences and sees many things that went on during WW2. She sees pilots that are dead, the brutal treatment of the Nazis towards the Jewish, and the continuous fear of the Nazis. The perspective of the characters in my book is of families that aren't really supporting the Nazi party but being loyal because of fear. They see the horrendous treatment and disagree with it, they keep Max in protection for as long as they can until suspicion arose. This leads to another connection as the Nazis were suspicious of people keeping and protecting the Jews and their homes, and would conduct searches.
Parks and Greenways Problems
Our goal with this project is to help make the environment a better place. We are looking to go out and clean up a park or greenway. As you can see in the graph to the right most of the litter left around in our area is styrofoam, and paper. Our goal is to pick up 20 bags of garbage. There is lots of littering pollution throughout parks in our North Carolina area. This issue is affecting all of the living things in the community. Littering can seep into the ground and then into the groundwater and then you have groundwater pollution. Some other effects of littering are more littering, fire hazard, breeding ground for bacteria, and just the cost to remove the litter (Conserve Energy Future). I personally am a nature person. I love being outside in the fall in the cool weather and the leaves. Unfortunately the litter that is just being thrown on the ground at any place and time is ruining the nature. I want to to keep the nature to be as nice as it can be to preserve the nature and keep the community enjoying the outside. The regular things that are littered are things like glass, paper, plastic, and fast food (JB Green Team). This is a big issue that everybody should know about. Littering is an illegal thing to do and if caught you will be charged. In North Carolina the first offense of littering is $250 with a maximum fine of up to $1000 (NC Public Safety). The community should also be aware of this issue so that we can keep North Carolina looking clean and nice, and so that we can be in the in the best possible health. Body Paragraph: The Problem Littering affects everyone in a community that is littered in. Littering has been an issue ever since people started becoming lazy enough to dump their trash in small amounts in other areas. Littering can also be accidental. Like if an uncovered dump truck full of debris drives down the road and scatters litter everywhere. Littering is a problem because it attracts vermin and creates a place for bacteria to multiply. Also, when litter gathers and becomes dried out, it becomes a fire hazard. It also becomes a danger to animals if they eat it or get stuck in it. Littering is a problem in our community because many people have become lazy and thrown their trash all over the place. After many, many, too many people do this, it begins to look regular and even more people disregard it, and then they end up littering, too. The effects of littering are that communities become less appealing. It also creates a fire hazard, attracts vermin, and provides a place for bacteria to multiply. If the littering problem is not solved, the world could become unlivable as a planet. It would be like the WALL-E movie, except we can’t fit the whole of people on Earth onto a spaceship. The more people litter, the more other people litter, and eventually it becomes a habit that no one cares about. It also encourages people to be more wasteful. If they keep throwing their trash everywhere, they don’t care about reducing, reusing, and recycling because they aren’t going to waste their time putting recycling where it belongs, if they already throw their trash everywhere. Body Paragraph: The Solution Many people in our community and other communities are helping to reduce and get rid of pollution with varying solutions. The two ways to prevent pollution are to prevent the pollution in the first place and to clean up the pollution that is already there. The first way, preventing pollution in the first place can range from recycling a soda can to using wind turbines and solar panels as alternative energy sources. The other way (and the way we are using for our project) is to clean up the pollution that there is now. It is hard to use this way to get rid of things such as air pollution and water pollution but you can pick up trash by hand and that is not hard to do at all. It is very accessible because all you need are yourself and a trash bag and you can get rid of a lot of litter and make a difference. There are many organizations in Raleigh and other cities that take volunteers to go pick up litter in parks and along streams and paths. The City of Raleigh and Wake County take volunteers to parks and greenways to clean up and do maintenance work. There is a need for help with this issue because despite many people wanting to help out and get rid of pollution there are many people that don't care and a lot of pollution ends up where it shouldn't be accident. Luckily in our community people want to help out and we are fortunate enough to have landfills and recycling. If everyone pitches in and helps these organizations then we can live in a community where pollution is hardly a problem at all. What can you do to help? The Plan In response to the high levels of parks and greenways, we propose to have a park cleanup. The 8th grade students could come together to clean up a park to help animals in their habitats and to reduce pollution levels. Small donations could be collected to help provide trash bags and litter sticks/ trash pickers. We could come together and ride over to Laurel Hills Park and pick up the trash around the area. There would be no cost to go cleanup the area but we will need to provide our own trash bags and trash pickers ( and maybe gloves). We could set up a donation table outside of the lunchroom to collect small donations to be able to provide the needed accessories. The transportation would be by a bus which we could ride there and back from. We would be participating this activity most likely on June 6th,2018 but if not that day then it would be June 7th. 2-4 weeks before we participate we can contact Laurel Hills and inform them on the specific information involving when we would be cleaning, and to make sure we have their permission. ( Laurel Hills Park Information 2018) This activity of cleaning at Laurel Hills could be an entertaining and interactive way for many Martin 8th grade students to come together and help reduce the pollution in our parks. We could have several students participate as buses have the capacity to fit many students. June 6th or 7th would be the day we participate, driving over to laurel hills in a short 15 minute drive (Google Maps 2018). The participation part would become very easy as the drive is so short. We would participate for about an hour or a little longer. We would have plenty of time to participate in the other activities that martin is doing. Our goals for this project is to help out the pollution status of laurel hills drop, as it is one of the most polluted parks in wake county. We believe that we could help clean a majority of the park as hopefully we could fill up as many bags as possible. The main goal though is to pick up at least about 20 bags of trash, but hopefully we can overachieve it. They had to rely on bottled water for about 1,000 days because of potential harmful chemicals inside their household wells and water systems. The leaks were very dangerous and could have effected the lives of many people. Studies are now being increased on how to prevent these problems from occurring again. The community and people were effected by this because there was a struggle to find sources of clean, safe and uncontaminated water. I found this interesting and important because around the state and country, contaminated water problems are occurring more frequently and are putting people in danger. Together we can come to find ways to prevent these problems from happening again.
I believe that people should have no distractions while crossing the street.
When i was in 6th grade, I was walking home from school not paying attention to anything but my phone. Little did I know at the time, it would be a huge mistake. As I approached Dixie Trail, with the leaves crunching at my feet, I was staring obliviously down at my screen. As I stepped on the narrow, paved road, i looked up from my phone. At a sudden glimpse, i noticed a red, rough minivan approaching fast as lightning. I froze and i couldn’t find myself to be capable of moving in time. The driver looked scared and frightened, just as i was feeling, with little time to react for both of us. She slammed on the breaks, shrieking so loud the whole neighborhood would be able to hear. The car came to a halt and we both let out a big sigh, relieved that nobody was hurt. Stunned and confused, i didn’t know what to do but move out of the situation. I jogged over to the cracked sidewalk, hustling home before any confrontation by the driver. I knew that I had made a mistake, one that could have been life threatening. As i stumbled home, I thought about my decisions, how I could have prevented that so scary sight. I went to bed sleepless, overthinking about the fright I had experienced. The next day I got off the same bus, same street, but this time i wasn’t distracted. The same lady, driving down the same, narrow dixie trail, stopped in the middle of the street. But this time is wasn’t to save my life, but to have a conversation. She talked about how to be safer, how to make better decisions, but she wasn’t mad at me for my mistake. She helped me learn a lesson, she helped me feel more relieved. As I go on from my scary experience, I made a decision to learn from it. I would make sure that there would be no distractions for me while I was crossing the street. Instead of focusing on what the score of the football game was, or who just texted me, I would focus on my safety. My device came before my safety, and I put myself in danger, one that would change my life forever. I learned from my mistakes, learned to be safe and focused, not only just crossing the street but during life in general. I believe people should have no distractions while crossing the street, and focus on their safety over their online devices. |
